Since Laurel Island will be built on a former landfill, there will be close coordination with SCDHEC through the voluntary clean-up program. A voluntary clean-up contract (VCC) will be put in place to protect the public and ensure these landfills are revitalized into a meaningful use for the City. Clean up protocols will include soil covers and methane gas venting, which are both common in brownfield redevelopment.

 

The site has been vented for several decades and will continue to be vented as construction is completed on Laurel Island.
